An invitation from Leigh-on-Sea Town Council
What’s this all about?
It’s about having a bit of fun and using the unexpected amount of free time that some of us have on our hands at the moment. Leigh-on-Sea Town Council is inviting local resi-dents of all ages to put their fingers to the keyboard and enter our writing competition.
We live in an interesting and vibrant town. So much goes on here but we all have our own individual responses and views on what it is like to live in Leigh-on-Sea. Parents - your children may have completely different opinions, of course and we would love to hear from them too (it might be useful as a focus for an activity while you are educating them at home). Your piece of writing can be from your own perspective or how you im-agine it to be for someone else. A working title could be something like ‘My Leigh-on-Sea’ but feel free to change it if you want to.
What do I do?
Create a piece of prose of around 250 words or a poem that would take up no more than an A4 page. Or some of you might like to create something using a graphic novel ap-proach or a cartoon strip. Whatever it is, it needs to be sent to us in an electronic form. You may decide to send us a photo or illustration for us to look at alongside your work.
Tell us your age and we’ll enter you into one of the categories below:
• 5-7 years
• 18 and above
What happens then?
A group of Town Councillors will be waiting eagerly for entries. We will read your work and select pieces that we will put on the Leigh-on-Sea Town Council website so that eve-ryone else can see them too.
And then what?
Our plan is to have a writing exhibition in the Community Centre throughout September (of course, due to the current situation, this date may need to change). Visitors to the ex-hibition will be able to vote on pieces of writing from all the different age groups.
There will be prizes for the winners and we will publish the winning entries in each cate-gory in the autumn edition of Leigh-on-Sea Town Council News.
