Merchant Navy Day

Today, Thursday 3rd September is Merchant Navy Day and Leigh-on-Sea Town Council are pleased to support Seafarers UK in their campaign to raise awareness of our island nation’s ongoing dependence on professional seafarers.

We raised the flag this morning on Strand Wharf at 11am and want to say a big thank you to those who attended the ceremony.

Merchant Navy Day honours the brave men and women who kept us afloat during both World Wars, and celebrates our dependence on modern day merchant seafarers who are responsible for over 90% of the UK’s imports, including almost half the food we eat, plenty of the fuel we rely on and virtually all the products and goods we tend to take for granted!
