Leigh-on-Sea’s first ‘Happy to Chat Bench’ has now been launched and is located just outside Leigh Community Centre. The bench features a small plaque inviting people to sit down if they would like to talk to someone. Passers-by are then encouraged to stop and say hello or sit down for a chat too.
The project was agreed some time ago but paused due to social distancing restrictions. Unfortunately, as a result of the pandemic, social isolation and has become a prevalent issue around the world and even a small gesture such as a simple ‘hello’ whilst someone is sat on a bench could help people feel happier. Now that restrictions have been lifted significantly the Council encourage residents to stop and chat with their neighbours and engage that community spirit, that Leigh has in abundance.
